Before you buy a fire pit or pizza oven, measure your usable outdoor space. Many fire pits will need around 1 metre of clear space. This amount of space allows for safety and comfortable movement around the fire pit. In comparison, a compact pizza oven doesn’t require much surrounding space. Always check the manufacturer’s guidance for the specific model you are looking to buy.
Start with the dimensions of your patio or the intended space. Use the following as a rough guide:
- Small patios: A fire bowl ranging from around 39 – 69 cm in diameter should work well. Pair with a compact, moveable pizza oven such as the Karu 2.
- Medium patios: A 57 – 90 cm fire bowl will keep a small gathering nice and warm. The Koda 2 gas-powered, portable outdoor pizza oven is an ideal choice.
- Larger patios: When you are entertaining larger gatherings in a spacious garden, you might need to increase the size of your fire pit from 69 cm diameter upwards. You will need a high-capacity pizza oven to match, such as the Karu 2 Pro with a 17” cooking area.

Don’t overlook practical considerations such as safety and how easy it is to walk around the fire pit. Keep walkways clear and never position a fire pit or oven beneath low-hanging branches, close to fencing or combustible materials.
Ventilation is also important in covered spaces or under a pergola. Always ensure airflow for smoke and heat to disperse comfortably. Portable metal fire pits are often lighter and offer more flexibility in terms of set up, as they can be moved around a garden (unlit). With the exception of gas-powered ovens, it’s also important to choose the right type of fuel for a fire pit or pizza oven.
